SCANNING TIPS and PROCEDURES

Procedure:

  1. Make sure the scanner is turned on.  Look for the green light.
  2. Place the image you want to scan face down on the scan bed. Align with the side of the scanner if necessary. (I do this for objects with flat edges to make sure it’s not crooked when it’s scanned.)
  3. You will open the scanner software through Photoshop:  Go to Start>Programs>Adobe>Photoshop
  4. From the File menu choose Import>Desk Scan (11 2.8).
  5. Scanning software should come up.  Click on PREVIEW .
  6. Use the scan selection tool or cropping tool to frame your image.
  7. Choose the proper settings.Consider the end use of this image.  Is it for web, print, video, or CD-Rom production?  Scan at a resolution of 200-300 pixels/inch if you are unsure.

General rules:

8. Set the mode.  Use millions of colors or True Color for color images and black and white photographs.

9. Use Grayscale mode for scanning black and white line art.  Contrast can be adjusted in Photoshop once the image is scanned.

10. VERY IMPORTANT:  When you scan an image which has already been printed, from a magazine for instance, use the “descreen” function of the scan to prevent moiré like patterns.  This will prevent the scanner from picking up on the half-tone screen patterns of printed material.

11. Check the image size, it’s file size and height and width.  Adjust if necessary.  Keep file size no larger than what you can store on your floppy disk or zip.

12. Now SCAN the image. Click SCAN or FINAL.   This will take a few seconds.  The image should open up in Photoshop.

13. Close the scanning window.

14. From Photoshop, save the image to the desktop.  Save as a .psd, or if necessary to get the file size down, you may save as a .jpg.
